Learning Goals (Standards)

Relevant National Standards:

Relevant Grade Span Expectations: ES1-1a, ES1-2a, ES1-3b, ES1-3d

1-1 Students demonstrate understanding of processes and change over timeby... a. plotting the location of mountain ranges and recent earthquakes and volcanic activities to identify any existing pattern
1-2 Students demonstrate understanding of processes and change over time by...
a. using given data and advances in technology to describe how scientific knowledge about plate tectonics has changed over time.

1-3 Students demonstrate understanding of processes and change over time by...
b. explaining how convection circulations of the mantle initiate movement of the crustal plates which then cause plate movement and seismic activity.
d. explaining how the physical and chemical processes of the Earth altar the crust (eg. seafloor spreading, hydrologic cycle, weathering)

Prerequisite knowledge:
For standard 1-1a students will need a previous understanding of the locations of volcanoes, mountain ranges, and earthquakes, OR students must have an understanding of how to plot on a world map from a given set of latitude and longitude.
For standard 1-2a students must be able to accurately read graphs, tables and other forms of data. Students must also have an understanding of the plates of the Earth, and how they are not static.

What I want them to get out of it:
From standard 1-1a I want the students to make a correlation between these plotted activities/structures and the Earth's plates.
For standard 1-2a I want the students to be accurately interpret given data and apply that knowledge. I would also want my students to understand how scientists develop new technology to better understand the Earth.

Misconceptions:
Some common misconceptions related to these standards are that the Earth's plates do not move, the Earth is a stable, single sphere.
The Earth has been dynamic, but now is relatively static. Human activity does not affect the geologic processes. A geological process is so slow, nothing will happen over their lifetime.
